The Making and Use of a Bokashi Compost Heap

Select a mixture of organic materials that contain either a high or low ratio of carbon to nitrogen, for example wood waste (sawdust or chippings are ideal) and/or grass. To gain an increase in the microbial diversity it is generally recommended that at least three different ingredients are used.

The method for making a typical Bokashi compost heap is as follows:

  1. Organic base material (kitchen/shredded garden waste) 100 litres (volume)
  2. EM-1 200 ml diluted slightly so that it will mix evenly with the organic materials.
  3. Build the material up in layers and stamp down firmly to release as much oxygen as is possible from the heap.
  4. Finally, cover the heap with a plastic cover or similar to contain the heat generated.
  5. Leave to ferment for six weeks minimum.

NOTE: The final product is not strictly speaking composted, but is fermented. This means that the EM-1 will transform the material in the heap into a valuable fertilizer. It will not look like traditional compost, but it is pre-fermented so that soil organisms can make best use of the material. There is absolutely no wastage from a rotting process, releasing valuable nutrients (and carbon dioxide) into the atmosphere.

The amount of water you use to dilute the EM-1 depends on the moisture level of the material used. Thirty per cent moisture is the maximum for proper fermentation. You can check that your heap is not too moist as follows: press the materials into a lump between your hands - it should remain whole and no moisture should leak from it.

Almost all organic materials are suitable for making Bokashi. If you are a keen gardener, there is nothing to stop you making your own at very little cost.

Usage:

You should use 0.5 kg Bokashi per square metre of soil.

Traditional Compost Heaps

You can also use EM-1 as accelerant for traditional composting.

The traditional way of making compost from kitchen/garden waste can be advanced by applying EM-1 regularly to the compost heap or container. Use 1-2 litres EM-1 per cubic metre (1000l).
